So a while back, almost 20 years ago now( which is crazy for me to say), I made a song about the plant goldenseal. I was inspired by this plant and it's healing qualities and I made a song about it. I’ll share that at some point but, now almost 20 years later I’m returning to that practice and making a song again - this song for now, is about a cherry tree. I was inspired by this cherry tree that sits outside of my window that compelled me into song one summer's day on my looper machine.
In the African and African American tradition; songs, drum rhythms and dances were made about nature and agriculture. So this is a return to my ancestral roots and as I go along in my life I plan to continue this process of connecting with the universe, the land, plants, food and learning from them and hopefully sharing not just what I learn but the feelings, vibe and culture that come along with being with them. That cherry tree along with other trees have reminded me that the earth, the land is always giving to us. Every season and every plant has its offering just like the cherry tree offers its blossoms in spring, fruit in summer and beautiful wood all year round.
The world is made up of abundance and beauty, no matter who tries to convince us otherwise. And if we let ourselves take in that magic, even in our lowest moments- we are reminded that things aren’t so bad, we’re reminded of earth’s love for us. So with this song I invite ya to come along on this walk with me. And at somewhere at sometime I’ll be posted up in the park or outside somewhere and maybe you’ll join me in real time. For now, enjoy this song and pass it on! Lastly, I'd like to thank my sister, Amenta Abioto aka Yawa who is a master musician and looper who introduced this style of music making to me.
